2 More Garages Ordered Vacated In Chelsea During DOB Sweep
After the fatal collapse of the garage at 57 Ann St. in the Financial District on April 18th, Department of Building (DOB) inspectors have been engaged in a thorough sweep to root out faulty structures. Two other garages have since been ordered to partially vacate in Chelsea.

Two garages in the Chelsea area have been ordered to partially vacate, coming at a time when Manhattan residents have been warily eyeing what structures they park their cars in since the April 18th collapse at 57 Ann St. The vacate orders were the result of a targeted enforcement sweep conducted after that disaster by the Department of Buildings (DOB).
A six-story commercial parking garage at 310 W. 39th St. was found in a state of disrepair, with excessive cracks throughout and inoperative emergency lights. Masonry was also missing. Furthermore, shoring was found in the cellar that had been installed without proper DOB work permits. Noting risk of structural failure, a partial vacate order was issued for the cellar, first floor, second floor, and fifth floor.
A nine-story commercial garage at 143 W. 40th St. was found lacking structural steel supports, with unpermitted shoring applied in various areas to compensate. There was also no power for lighting on the right side of the building, in addition to a non-working drainage system that caused flooding on multiple floors. A partial vacate order was issued for parts of the cellar, first floor, sixth floor, and seventh floor.
Six more parking garages have received either partial or full vacate notices in the downtown area of Manhattan. These include garages at : 228 E. 9th St., 225 Rector Place, 14 S. William St., 50 Bayard St., 148 Madison St., and 160 W. 10th St.
