Marshalls To Shutter Shop On Broadway
By March 25, the bargain store will be no more, a spokesperson confirmed
The Marshalls on the corner of West 78th Street and Broadway will be no more by March 25, a spokesperson confirmed to The West Side Spirit. The bargain retail store isn’t alone in closing shop, with chains across the Upper West Side—and Manhattan as a whole—struggling to rebound post-pandemic.
ILoveTheUpperWestSide, which broke news of the looming closure at the end of January, reported that an employee attributed the decision to “problems in the building.” “[They] are closing for safety,” the employee said. On Friday, Feb. 3, a manager at the Upper West Side location told The West Side Spirit that employees did not have any information on why the store would be closing.
“We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies, and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking,” a Marshalls spokesperson wrote in an email, directing Upper West Siders to a T.J. Maxx on Columbus Avenue on the block between West 97th and West 100th Streets and another Marshalls on Sixth Avenue between West 18th and West 19th Streets, as alternatives to the soon-to-be-shuttered Broadway outpost.
A spokesperson for the property manager at The Larstrand, a luxury apartment complex in the same building, wrote in an email that “Marshalls has chosen to not renew its lease and as a result they will be vacating the retail space at 2182 Broadway.”
