New Vessel Press Hosts Pop-up Display in Former Home of Bank Street Bookstore
The independent publisher of books in translation is bouncing back after COVID-19
In April, New Vessel Press — an Upper West Side independent publishing house founded in 2012 and dedicated to literature in translation — took over the former storefront of Bank Street Bookstore for a pop-up display of its roughly 50 books. The month-long pop-up will continue through the middle of May and the displays will continue to evolve, according to New Vessel Press Cofounder and Publisher Michael Wise.
By exhibiting the books in the large windows of 2780 Broadway, Wise hopes to draw more attention to the publishing company’s array of novels “from around the world” after a difficult past year.
“Independent bookstores are really good advocates for the types of books that we publish,” he explained. “But for several months, bookstores were largely shuttered in New York and elsewhere. So we lost that opportunity for people to see what we’re doing physically, in a bookstore.”
Now, Wise has noticed rising sales as the COVID-19 pandemic eases in New York. New Vessel Press’ books are not sold at the current pop-up location, but can be found at various bookstores across the city — including Book Culture, the Strand, McNally Jackson and Shakespeare and Company. Every few months, Wise also hosts pop-up sales on the Upper West Side.
