One Firefighter Injured Battling Blaze One Block from Madison Sq. Garden
Fire in abandoned commercial building went to two alarms and blocked W. 35th St for several hours but was quickly extinguished. It is second fire in one of an abandoned buildings near Madison Square Garden in recent months.
One firefighter was injured as a blaze erupted in a commerical building one block north of Madison Square Garden erupted on April snarling Friday evening traffic for hours.
It marks the second major fire in an unoccupied building near Madison Square Garden in recent months. In January, three firefighters were hospitalized battling a blaze in the historic Hotel Pennsylvania. The 104 year old hotel is slated for demolition as part of the redevelopment plans for the Penn Station area which are currently in limbo.
The injured firefighter in the latest blaze was transported to Bellevue Hospital. Twenty five units and 105 firefighters responded to the blaze at 254 W. 35th Street between Seventh and Eight Avenue.
Firefighters hoisted a ladder to the third floor of the unoccupied commercial building and extinguished the fire in under an hour. The source of the fire is under investigation.
