A week after a 59 year old died alone on a street in Chelsea, police are still searching for his next of kin.

Police were called to the scene at W. 29th just of Eighth Ave. on Sept. shortly after 8:30 a.m. following reports of an unresponsive male on the sidewalk.

It appeared to bystanders to be a drug overdose, although the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiners office.

Police said the male is 59 years old. EMS responded and pronounced him dead at the scene. He was discovered outside a building that is undergoing renovation. Death apparently came unexpectedly. A pizza box and a container of takeaway food could be seen on the ground next to the deceased as police worked to throw a sheet over the body.

“There is no criminality suspected at this time and the investigation remains ongoing,” according to a police spokesperson.

The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification. Police had yet to release a name as of Sept. 22.
